The JEJU [navy base] Area Which TOURISTS Don’t See…

This website is loosely based around 3 things I simply love about South Korea – essentially Hangul FONTS, ‘Hidden’ UNDERGROUNDS & Harmonious CAFÉS in Korea – and although none of those are the main subject of this article (or the attached video containing a short speech I gave recently in Jeju), you will find various Hangul Fonts in the flags being used by the Jeju Navy Base activists.

To give you a little background… this Navy Base issue predates my first visit to see some of these Gangjeong Village activists way back in the autumn of 2012 and the construction of the base was opposed by so, so many individuals and groups across South Korea.

For over a decade and a half, activists have been protesting to stop the navy base on Jeju Island, in the Gangjeong Village area.  The destruction of the natural coastline alone – including the rocks of Gureombi (구럼비) – was devastating to nature, locals and many other Koreans.

Of course, there are many other reasons why so many oppose this North American base and even now there are additional effects being felt, nuclear submarines appearing and even an impending satellite launch from the island of Jeju.

When you add all this together with the hundreds of THAAD bases being placed all over the Southern part of the Korean peninsula – none of which probably have any connection to any risks from the North of Korea [and many say that actually, these are all aimed or ready to be aimed or launched towards China] – and so many other aspects, it’s truly heartbreaking in many ways, and devastating to beautiful Jeju Island.

Jeju’s past has already dealt with heartbreak, loss, invasion and massacre:  http://jeju43peace.org

Here is a link to a little more info about the issue… Essentially, it’s one of my earlier film reviews and an overview of the situation and of course an insight into that movie itself: https://miniminimovie.com/featured-film-gureombi-the-wind-is-blowing/

I joined in with the peaceful activism, a little dancing, joined them for food afterwards and catching-up in general. Whilst I was there, they asked me to give a little introduction and briefly mention what I do and I took that opportunity to speak also about other Korean causes I’ve passionate about.  Many thanks to Curry for the great interpreting.

Thank you Gangjeong Village peace-fighters (!), you always make me feel so welcome on ALL my trips to see you and which I have been doing since 2012.
